Avoiding my Cloth Diapers

I haven’t used cloth diapers in 15 days.

They need stripping and these days I feel like I cannot simply do one more thing.

Our littlest has been sick, we’ve had doctor appointments, I’ve been writing report cards, and I’ve been working on this non-stop. Something had to give and I choose to sacrifice the cloth diapers.

The diapers have been sitting in the hallway. Waiting for a dip in the bathtub…I have been trying very hard not to notice them.

We’ve still been using cloth wipes. ( They don’t need stripping.)

Visiting the land of disposable diapering has reminded me what I love about cloth.. which, of course, serves to feed my guilt about the basket of cloth diapers.

I’m telling you this because sometimes we need to cut ourselves a break. Raising beautiful little people and taking care of our lives, our families and ourselves is hard work!

I hold my values closely of reusing items and caring for our earth. I also know how very hard it is for me to NOT do something and for these past 15 days, I’ve given myself permission to remove anything extra from my to-do-list.

Things are looking lighter in my life and I’m ready to strip my diapers, square my shoulders, and move on.

Have you ever had a hiatus from cloth diapering?

Constipation in Infants and Children

Did you ever think that once you became a parent, you would talk or think this much about poop? How much, how often, what it looks like? The subject can take over your life, especially when your child becomes constipated.

Constipation in children and infants naturally occurs sometimes but it becomes a concern when it happens more frequently.

In some cases poor diet, or not enough fluids can result in constipation. Even newborns can experience constipation when their diet consists only of breast milk or formula.

Changing their diet (or yours, if you’re breastfeeding) or increasing fluid intake can help regulate their bowels but if nothing you’ve done is relieving your little one from constipation, chiropractic might be your next option.

How are chiropractic and proper bowel function related?

Gentle chiropractic adjustments realign the vertebrae of the spine. Realigning the vertebrae decreases the amount of pressure that’s on the nerves.  Reducing this pressure is important because nerves, which begin in your spine, send information back and forth between your brain and the rest of  your body. Extra pressure on the nerve due to a misalignment (also called a subluxation) will prevent the proper signal from being sent, affecting your body’s function. Certain nerves in the lower back and tailbone control the function of the large intestine. If those nerves are misfiring due to a subluxation it can lead to constipation. With a few gentle chiropractic adjustments, normal nerve system control of the intestinal system can be restored bringing relief to both you and your little one.

Every situation is different so results may vary, but many parents have seen immediate success with chiropractic adjustments for constipation in their children.

How to Choose Cloth Diapers

With so many reusable diapering options it can be overwhelming to choose cloth diapers that are best suited to your family’s and baby’s needs.

Ask yourself which of the 5 statements below seem to most accurately describe your diapering needs.

If you answer honestly, you’ll likely be able to match your ideals to your budget and lifestyle! The results? Finding the perfect cloth diaper solution!

choosing cloth diapers

I’m on a budget. I’m choosing cloth diapers to save money.

Choose prefolds & one-size covers for the most economical cloth diapering experience.

I want Canadian made cloth diapers.

Choose amongst several great brands including AMP, Monkey Doodlez, Applecheeks, Bummi’s and April’s Baby to support Canadian manufactured cloth diapers many which have been designed (and often) made by moms.

6 Reasons your Cloth Diapers are Leaking

Does it seem like suddenly your reusable diapers aren’t working as hard as they used too?

cloth diapers are leaking

What’s a mama to do when her cloth diapers are leaking?

1. Check the Fit of your Diapers.

One of the main reasons for leak is improper fit. Make sure that the legs are tight with no gaps. The tummy should not have any gaps. Your cloth diaper should be snug.

If you are using a two-piece cloth diaper, it is key to cloth diaper success that all parts of the inside part (prefold, flat, insert, fitted) are tucked inside the cover. If any piece is sticking out, than you will have leaks.

2. Do you have  a Residue Issue?

Consider the following questions…
  • What laundry detergent are you using? Not all detergents are compatible with cloth diapering, check if yours is!
  • Are you using dryer sheets with the diapers? Stop! Wool dryer balls are a safer alternative!
  • Many detergents will leave a coating on the diapers as will dryer sheets. This prevents absorbency and leaves your cloth diapers full of yucky chemicals.
  • Have you been using a cream on baby’s bottom? Is it cloth diaper safe? Check that there are no cod liver or fish oils in yours!

Six Tips to Solve Cloth Diaper Rashes

When you began cloth diapering you were told that your baby would not get any or very few rashes..am I right?
Perhaps you’re feeling frustrated or have switched to disposables and feel stuck. Don’t give up on your cloth diapers, yet!

We can solve this and you’ll be happily cloth diapering baby once more.

Cloth diaper rashes usually occur because of detergent, wash routine, sensitivity to types of cloth  or food.

Tip #1. Examine your wash routine.

Do your diapers still smell a bit when they come out of the wash or is there a strong smell on them after your baby pees?
This may  indicate a wash problem. If you look in your washer at the end of the cycle there should be no bubbles. If there are bubbles, rinse the diapers again because there is still detergent on them.  You may need to “strip” them as detailed below.

Expert Series: Choosing Birth Photography

Birth Photography is quickly becoming a sought-after service for moms-to-be and their partners.

Parents that choose to hire a birth photographer do so because they want to have the birth of their child captured by someone who is not directly involved in the labour and delivery of the child.  The sole purpose of the photographer is to capture the images.  He or she doesn’t have to act as a midwife, doula, doctor or nurse and is able to perform his/her task without distraction.

 birth photography

Parents who choose to hire a birth photographer do not necessarily fit into any particular category.

Although many parents who hire photographers tend to have midwife-assisted births at home, many also choose to deliver at the hospital.  Parents who choose birth photography have the mindset that they want the birth documented, and that’s what motivates them to hire a photographer.   It is important that both parents-to-be are completely open to the idea of having the birth photographed, otherwise, it can cause tension during the labour and delivery time.  If the birth is occurring at a hospital, the parents must find out the photography policies of the hospital and/or doctor prior to hiring a professional birth photographer.  This will avoid any tension during the labour and delivery.

Stripping Cloth Diapers with The Laundry Tarts

I spent last Sunday stripping. It wasn’t sexy but it was kinda fun….

Over the holidays, both my husband and I and the kids had been sick-stomach flu sick. Barf.

It turns out we had each left a pail liner full of cloth diapers in the laundry room with the intent to return to put them in the wash.

We surpassed the limit for the number of days you can go between cloth diaper washes.

It’s best if I don’t tell you how long those poor diapers sat in the basement….

I ran our cloth diapers through two complete wash cycles but when baby M. wet them, they smelled T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E. We had a serious smell situation with our cloth diapers and I needed to take action.

Here’s how I stripped our cloth diapers and brought them back to being fab and fluffy!

Strip Step 1. All the cloth diapers were put through a typical wash cycle so they were clean.

Strip Step 2. I filled up the bathtub with warm/hot water and two sample packages of The Laundry Tarts Strip It!

Maybe it’s time we all got scared enough to do something…

Forget your coffee. This video will be all the jolt you need.

You may have heard some of the information before but hearing it and seeing all the data together is a call to action

It can feel like there is nothing you can do to protect your child after watching the video. It’s not true-there are many simple things you can do starting today to make a difference in the lives of your family and your children. One simple step you can take today, is to stop using air fresheners. Get rid of them.

As the great lady, Margaret Mead said,

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

Feel sad for a few moments, but it’s time to get angry, be noisy and make some real change. What will you do?
